Turning the Pages of Education with Bookr
Bookr is a great tool for both teachers and students. Teachers with younger students, grades K-2, can create a book that highlights the big ideas of a unit or topic. Bookr allows students to create their own books about a variety of topics, whether it is fictional or informational. It is an intuitive tool that is easy for teacher and students to understand and use. Bookr searches through and uses images on Flickr that are under the Creative Commons copyright. This means that the images you use in Bookr have already been given permission by the owner to be used in your book.
The following video is intended for first grade teachers. The topic of the book that I created was about the solid state of matter, centering around the key idea that a solid doesn't change shape. This is an important scientific concept for first graders. However, any teacher or student would benefit from using Bookr as a part of the learning process.
How can a teacher use Bookr in their classroom? A teacher can use Bookr to create an online PhotoBook with the program and use it to teach important key ideas. Using my sample book from the video as an example, a first grade teacher could use the book to introduce the idea that solids don't change shape to their students. They would be able to use the online PhotoBook just like the can with any printed material. The pages turn like with printed material and the teacher has the freedom to stop for discussion and turn the pages forward or backward as they wish.
For a student using Bookr, there are specific NETS-S that are met. These include:
- Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
• Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
- Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools and resources.
• Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project
- Digital Citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.
• Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology
